What is included in a Dude Ranch Vacation?

Meals, lodging, and most activities are included in one price at a DRA member ranch. With over 90 members in the DRA, the experience is unique at every property and offers diverse getaways for every budget. On average, dude ranch stays cost approximately $600/night per person plus taxes and gratuities (some higher, some lower). Most ranches require at least a 5–7-night stay during their peak operating season, but some take a 3-night stay as well. There are minimal additional fees; however, for activities like spa treatments, guided fly-fishing, or wine tastings that require extra staff, additional fees are usually incurred. Alcohol is very rarely included in the price of a ranch stay and many ranches are BYOB. DRA member ranches strive to ensure all additional costs and fees are easy to understand and clearly posted, leaving out the guess work and hidden fees at checkout.

Dude Ranch vs. Guest Ranch: What is the Difference?

To keep it simple, one word is the difference! Historically, there was a difference between dude ranches and guest ranches; guest ranches were more high-end luxury style ranches and dude ranches were more traditional, working style ranches; but today there truly is no difference. Dude and guest ranches have become interchangeable terms. In the DRA’s terms, there is no distinction between dude ranch and guest ranch because with every experience and ranch being different, it is difficult to differentiate and separate the terms. You can either be a guest at a dude ranch or a dude at a guest ranch!

What to Expect on a Dude Ranch Vacation?

Good food, Western-themed adventures, a variety of activities and welcoming hospitality is what you should expect and will find on a Dude Ranchers’ Association member dude ranch. Activities can vary from ranch to ranch – shooting sports to fishing, children’s programs to river rafting, and everything in between. You will find something for all ages! For certain, you will find that every DRA member ranch has a developed horseback riding program and that can cater to every level of rider.

Your typical day on a dude ranch will look like a hearty breakfast in the dining room or lodge followed by a morning activity (horseback riding, fishing, hiking, etc.). A great lunch will await you upon your return from your activity, and in the afternoon, more activities or downtime will be on the schedule. Choose your activities and involvement no matter the day. Each night wraps up with dinner, conversation and reminiscing from the day’s adventures. Most nights there will be some kind of entertainment for guests to enjoy – music, campfires, dancing, or even a rodeo. The beauty of dude ranches is that guests choose their schedule.
