What is a Dude Ranch?

What is a dude ranch vacation, you ask? It is the original Western adventure vacation! Dude ranches set the scene for guests to immerse themselves in the Western lifestyle and learn the cowboy way of life.

A dude ranch is a vacation destination that welcomes guests for an all-inclusive Western getaway. A stay typically includes lodging, meals, daily horseback riding, and activities like fishing, hiking, and more. The Dude Ranchers’ Association (DRA) represents member ranches across 10 Western U.S. states and one Canadian province, each offering a unique way to experience the West.

A Brief History of Dude Ranching

Back in the late 19th century, working ranches began opening their doors to visitors from the East Coast and Midwest looking to experience the West and escape their everyday routines. Guests quickly fell in love with the spirit of the West, and these ranches became a home away from home where returning guests formed lifelong friendships with staff and fellow visitors.

That welcoming tradition continues today. Dude ranch vacations offer a chance to experience Western hospitality, learn about ranch traditions, and gain a greater appreciation for the horses, land, and way of life that make these destinations so special.

In 2026, the DRA celebrates 100 years of Western hospitality, honoring a century of helping guests discover the American West and the cowboy way of life.

What is included in a Dude Ranch Vacation?

Meals, lodging, and most activities are included in one price at a DRA member ranch. With over 90 members in the DRA, the experience is unique at every property and offers diverse getaways for every budget. On average, dude ranch stays cost approximately $600/night per person plus taxes and gratuities (some higher, some lower). Most ranches require at least a 5–7-night stay during their peak operating season, but some take a 3-night stay as well. There are minimal additional fees; however, for activities like spa treatments, guided fly-fishing, or wine tastings that require extra staff, additional fees are usually incurred. Alcohol is very rarely included in the price of a ranch stay, and many ranches are BYOB. DRA member ranches strive to ensure all additional costs and fees are easy to understand and clearly posted, leaving out the guesswork and hidden fees at checkout. All of this to say, each ranch is different in what they offer and include in one price, but rest assured a dude ranch vacation is worth the value and more!

Dude Ranch vs. Guest Ranch: What is the Difference?

Historically, the terms dude ranch and guest ranch were sometimes used to describe different styles of ranch vacations. Today, the terms are generally interchangeable. At the DRA, there is no formal distinction between the two.

Instead, it can be helpful to think about the kind of ranch experience you’re looking for. Here are three general styles to explore:

Working Cattle Ranches: Interested in the working side of ranch life? These experiences focus on cattle operations and the traditions and responsibilities that come with them. Activities vary by ranch.

Traditional Dude Ranches: These ranches emphasize Western hospitality, horseback riding, and outdoor recreation, giving guests a chance to experience the traditions and atmosphere of ranch life.

Luxury Dude Ranches: Looking for a little extra comfort? Luxury ranches may offer upscale accommodations, elevated dining, and additional amenities alongside Western activities.

Every ranch is different, and some combine elements of more than one style. The best way to find your fit is to explore what each property offers.

What to Expect on a Dude Ranch Vacation?

Good food, Western adventures, a variety of activities, and welcoming hospitality are all part of the experience at DRA member ranches. Activities vary from ranch to ranch and may include horseback riding, fishing, hiking, shooting sports, river rafting, and children’s programs.

And don’t worry if you’ve never ridden a horse; DRA member ranches have developed horseback riding programs for different levels of experience. All welcome beginners and offer instruction to help guests become more comfortable and confident around horses. Depending on the ranch, you may also have opportunities to learn about horsemanship and horse care, gaining a better understanding of the animals that play such an important role in ranch life.

What does a Typical Day look like?

Your typical day will start with a hearty breakfast in the dining room or lodge, followed by a morning activity such as horseback riding, fishing, or hiking, etc. A great lunch will await you upon your return from your activity, and in the afternoon, more activities or downtime will be on the schedule. Choose your activities and involvement no matter the day. Evenings often bring guests together to share stories from the day. Depending on the ranch, you might enjoy live music, a campfire, dancing, or even a rodeo.

The beauty of a dude ranch vacation is that you can make it your own. Fill your days with activities or slow down and enjoy the scenery. Shared meals, group adventures, and time spent together create a sense of community that makes the experience memorable. It’s a chance to unplug from everyday routines, reconnect with family and friends, and enjoy a different pace of life.
