About Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch

While The Hideout offers most of the experiences travelers are looking for in a guest ranch or adventure travel experience, this ranch offers so much more. The Hideout has an exceptionally positive culture which embraces professionalism, quality, safety, fun and diversity with a passion to excel.

The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch in Shell, Wyoming is located East of Yellowstone National Park and Cody, Wyoming. The service, food, accommodations and amenities are all upscale while remaining a ranch and not a resort. The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch is a working cattle, riding, horsemanship and adventure ranch.

The ranch is located on a 300,000 acre ranch and farm. During most weeks our guests can experience a hands-on working cattle adventure. In addition to the land we ranch and farm, we have access to approximately 650,000 acres of Big Horn National Forest and Wilderness to explore. Elevations range from 4,200 feet in the valley to 13,200 feet in the wilderness Area. Due to the many exposed formations the variety of scenery is rare to find combined in one area.

This is not a nose-to-tail ranch, and with approximately 25 riders per week this is almost a customized experience with daily choices in terms of riding and non-riding activities.

The Hideout takes pride in above-average numbers of staff and horses per guest. Most visitors from around the world come for the outstanding horses and horsemanship program and to a ranch where horses are treated as valuable employees. This is a riding ranch which means that all levels of riders from beginning to very accomplished riders, including Western and English riders, will find a quality experience.

At The Hideout, advanced riders will find an experienced and friendly barn staff, excellent horses and rides varying from leisurely and relaxing to fast-paced and challenging. Beginning or intermediate riders will find very patient instructors and safe, willing horses.

The Hideout embraces horsemanship and low stress stockmanship as it fits the all-encompassing culture we embrace and are passionate about. Every week horsemanship orientation and clinics are offered to the guests, along with half-day and full-day scenic rides, team penning, cattle work on the ranch, stockmanship and much more.

Along with Quarter Horses, The Hideout has a heart for Mustangs and we have a selection of Mustangs in our herd for intermediate and experienced guests to ride.

When it comes to scenic and trail riding, we are very flexible and guests can choose every day between half-day rides, 2/3 day rides, all-day rides, slower rides, faster rides, horsemanship, lessons, etc.

We have 8 well-maintained heavy duty 4x4 truck and trailer combinations in which we load up horses and guests and go off to explore a different area every day of the week. Having access to many acres is one thing, the ability to explore in all directions is an amazing benefit of visiting The Hideout.

With so much country to ride and explore, even our own staff and the many repeat guests who visit year after year experience new country and trails every season.

Our horses are well-adapted to handle this challenging terrain.

In addition to riding The Hideout offers a great fly-fishing program for experienced as well as beginning fly-fishers. Also available are canoeing, kayaking, 4x4 tours, hiking, biking, a visit to local dinosaur dig sites (check availability), Cody Night Rodeo, etc.

We have a nice Trapshooting Range with .12 and .20 gauge Beretta shotguns and a dedicated Archery Range with traditional, compound bow and cross-bow.

The dining experience at The Hideout has earned a great reputation and adds to the desire for guests to come back again and again.

The cabins are upscale and well-appointed with wireless internet, flat screen televisions, bathrobes, amenities, and they are cleaned daily.

The Hideout enjoys a growing number of repeat guests and usually books up early in the season through word of mouth. The Hideout's regular guest season runs from mid-March through early November. While most of The Hideout's spring and fall guests are adults, the summer months of June, July and August see many families.

The Hideout does not offer a special children's program with counselors or nannies, because we believe that families should enjoy a memorable ranch vacation together. The Hideout does have a minimum age of approximately 8 years old.

The owners & managers of The Hideout and the ranch are actively involved in looking after the guests to make sure no corners are being cut when it comes to offering a great vacation out West.

Due to its mix of US, Canadian and European visitors The Hideout staff & management speaks four languages, is culturally astute and has an open mind to the world while preserving a great Western Heritage.

Ranch Dining: Our healthy, upscale Western fare and gourmet dinners are one of the reasons that many of our guests return every year. We grow our own vegetables and our chef sources many fresh ingredients locally at farmers' markets. In addition to dishes like juicy certified Black Angus steaks we serve fresh seafood, game, chicken, pork or vegetarian dishes. Each morning our Breakfast cook serves up a hearty hot breakfast. The Hideout's chef will work with any reasonable dietary requests.
Ranch Activities: Most guests come for the riding, quality horses and horsemanship, and the opportunity to work cattle. The Hideout offers a great trapshooting range, canoeing, 4x4 tours, hiking, biking, visit to the local dinosaur sites, Cody Rodeo, roping, riding lessons, etc. The fly-fishing program is led by a professional guide who can take you to the best spots, as well as teach the beginners. During most of the season we have a full time fly-fishing professional on staff.
