All-Inclusive & Upscale
The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch is all-inclusive, upscale, and focused on riding, horsemanship, and especially caring deeply about your ranch riding experience. Limited to around 23 riders weekly, the ranch is in the tiny hamlet of Shell, Wyoming, east of Cody and Yellowstone National Park at the foot of the little-known Big Horn Mountains and National Forest. With a backyard of 650,000 acres in an area with a tremendous diversity of scenery and altitudes ranging from 4,200 to 13,100 feet, you will seldom see the same trail twice. Since its beginnings, The Hideout has always been a clean, organized, intimate, and well-maintained guest ranch. More an equestrian destination than the traditional guest or dude ranch.
Quarter, Paint, & Mustangs
Our string of 100 horses consists of Quarter Horses, Paints, and a growing number of Mustangs. We take pride in a very personal, fun, and safe riding experience. We offer a number of non-riding activities such as trapshooting, fly-fishing, biking, hiking, and relaxing in our hot tub or taking a dip in 60 x 18 lap pool. But the main reason guests from the US and around the world return year after year is to ride and enjoy the very personal attention to detail and great care for guests and horses. Every year we invest more in groundwork and training to continue to improve the quality of our horses and riding experience. We welcome all levels of riders from beginners to advanced.
At The Hideout, we are passionate, professional, and deeply care about your ranch riding vacation and well-being. We are committed to the highest standards of healthy culinary experience, quality lodging, attentive staff, and responsive horses. Our European/American owners and our staff are multi-cultural and view diversity as an asset. We welcome a growing number of international riders and travelers each week. The owners of The Hideout, Peter, and Marijn De Cabooter are very involved in the daily operations and well-being of our guests.
The Hideout is all about horses, riding, horsemanship, and playing with cattle. More an equestrian destination than the traditional guest or dude ranch. Every year we invest in more groundwork, training, and general well-being of our horses. Well-trained horses and happy horses are safe horses. Beginners who want to learn, intermediate riders, and advanced riders enjoy coming to The Hideout because of our equestrian focus. On a regular basis, we conduct horsemanship and liberty demonstrations. Guests are invited and encouraged to participate in these demonstrations. We offer team penning, play with cattle, and if local ranchers need a hand herding or moving cattle, we are happy to do it. Depending on their riding experience, our participating. lessons if there is enough interest. While we are foremost an equestrian and riding destination, we do offer non-riding activities such as fly-fishing (let us know in advance), hiking, biking, trapshooting, hiking, biking, relaxing in our hot tub, or taking a dip in our 60 x18 heated lap pool. The Hideout is mostly about riding and horses and each year the focus and investments in all things horses is increasing.
Our wranglers are mature and come with a solid equestrian background and experience. Mostly both in English and Western Riding. Most of our wranglers are female and have great people skills.

Due to our small size and remote location, cancellations or rescheduling of dates affect us significantly. We limit the number of our guests to approximately 25 travelers each week to keep our guests’ experience personal and customized. As a small, family-owned and operated business, this means that every booking is important to ensure an exclusive boutique experience and excellent service. All cancellations (no matter the reason) will forfeit the full 30% deposit (50% deposit for groups of 8 or more) unless we are able to refill the entire space at the original pricing. If we can fill the entire space, the deposit will be refunded minus a $150 per person cancellation fee. If your space is not filled, the total deposit is forfeited.
Trip Cancellation Insurance Recommended – Because The Hideout serves a limited number of guests, we strongly suggest that you purchase trip cancellation insurance.
