The Blacktail Ranch is a Historic 8,000-acre jewel, located where the prairie meets the Rockies in Wolf Creek Montana. Our Grandfather first came to this valley back in the late 1800s and our family has lived and worked here ever since. We have been operating as a guest ranch since the 1950s.
A few of the things our guests enjoy are an exceptionally beautiful mountain ranch, daily unlimited horseback riding, cattle drives, first-class accommodations, three healthy and wholesome meals a day, and of course great fishing.
We offer unlimited riding every day. There is no better way to explore the Blacktail, see wildlife, and enjoy the great outdoors than on horseback. Our large string of horses is able to accommodate a wide variety of riding skills, beginners needing basic instruction to the advanced rider in search of adventure on our daylong treks up into the mountains. In June and September join us for moving cattle to and from the high country. Ride with our local cowboys and get a taste of the authentic west. No riding nose to tail here.
Sign up for our two night three day “Divide Ride” where we stay in our upper camp and then ride to the top of the Continental Divide where you will experience expansive views of the Majestic Rocky Mountains from every direction. We set up camp in the beauty of the mountains at the base of the Divide. This camp has hot and cold running water and alternative power, so there is no need to rough it too much. Choose a comfortable bed inside our “Hide Out” Cabin, opt for sleeping under the stars or you may wish to sleep in the tent. Your options are many. The Blacktail Ranch is famous for its 3 day Divide Ride and we would love to have you join in the adventure.
Whether you like to fish a mountain stream or cast your line across a wide river the Blacktail offers endless fishing opportunities. The South Fork of the Dearborn River flows through the ranch for mountain stream fishing. Minutes away are the famous Blackfoot and Missouri Rivers. They are both Blue Ribbon, premium fly-fishing rivers. Guided and unguided fishing trips can be arranged before you arrive or during your stay. The same two amazing rivers offer an exciting day of rafting and river fun!
The Blacktail is rich in archeological sites including an extensive cave system dating back to the last Ice Age, you may also visit a Sun Wheel, a Medicine Wheel, and numerous tipi rings from the more recent native Americans. The Ranch museum displays hundreds of artifacts taken from the cave and surrounding area as wells as articles and antiques from the homestead era on the Blacktail. All of these sites can be toured during your stay with us.
You choose your activities for the day. Plan a day full of adventure and excitement or relax on your deck with a good book. Find a spot under the huge Cottonwoods with the therapeutic sound of the creek to wash those cares away. Our residential massage therapist, Linda Brice is available daily. Linda has over 12 years of experience and is sure to melt away tight muscles and saddle sores. Book a private yoga session or join a group. Kim Schlicher (yoga instructor) is just a phone call away.
More than anything, what we offer our guest is a true love of our ranch and the genuine ability to make everyone feel at home. Our home is your home and we are sure you will feel the same once you set your feet down at our door. Please give us a call or send us a message and we can talk over the details of your stay. We are looking forward to a busy season and do hope you can be a part of it.
Specializing in horseback riding and fishing, river rafting, cave exploring, family museum tours, great hiking with Blacktail naturalist, wildlife viewing including exceptional birding. Partake in a full body massage, or a yoga class, both are possible every day of your stay. You may also enjoy, evening campfires and western line dancing, riding and roping instruction, and much more.
