Southwest Montana Valley

Upper Canyon Outfitters is located in southwest Montana in a valley near Yellowstone National Park where Native American tribes of Crow, Shoshone, Snake and Bannock once summered beneath the mountains and along the streams that provided all they needed to survive through the changing Montana seasons.

Premier Montana Guest Ranch

Our grandparents, Peck and Mary Tate, homesteaded here in 1910 and began a working ranch that would pass through our family for generations. In 1981, their son Bill and his wife Bernice opened the doors to guests and made a place for all who came at our family table. Since then, through the support and efforts of family and friends, Upper Canyon Outfitters has grown to become one of the premier guest ranches in Montana.

Four Generations of Family

Today, four generations of our family live on the ranch and in July of 2021, we will be celebrating 111 years of calling the lands of the Ruby Valley home. We’ve been fortunate to raise our family in a place surrounded by the mountains of the Greenhorn, Gravelly, and Snowcrest ranges, the waters of the Ruby River, and the wooded valleys of the Beaverhead National Forest, and we hope that you’ll become part of our family as well and come visit us time and time again.

Our dude ranch offers horseback riding, hunting, fishing, fly-fishing, firearms instruction, hiking, guided 4×4 tours and history tours.

UCO HUNTING POLICIES
Check-In: Saturday at 10 a.m.
Check-Out: Friday at 10 a.m.

Guided hunters will be picked up in Bozeman by 9 a.m. at their hotel. It is important that you communicate your travel agenda and hotel information to UCO. We suggest flying the day before check-in and the day after check-out.

Taxes, hunting licenses and gratuity are not included in the prices listed. Customary gratuity for satisfied guests is 15-20% of the total stay.

Please note your client responsibilities: All clients will be required to follow the ranch/stable and guides’ safety policies and procedures and all clients will be required to sign a Participant Assumption of Risks, Acknowledgment of Inherent Risks and Indemnity Agreement in favor of Upper Canyon Outfitters, Inc. upon arrival.

UCO is the home to many pets and livestock, for this reason, we do not allow any outside pets at the ranch.

RESERVATION AND CANCELLATION POLICY
Because we accommodate only a few hunters, it is suggested hunters make reservations in advance. A deposit of 30% is required to book a hunt. Deposits are fully refundable if our hunters are unsuccessful in drawing a license, only when UCO applied for licenses. Should a hunter cancel a hunt prior to February 1, the deposit will be returned in full, less a $50 cancellation fee. If you cancel your hunt after February 1, your deposit will be transferred to the following year IF another replacement hunter is found and all fees are paid, otherwise all deposits are non-refundable.

We strongly encourage you to obtain Travel Insurance endorsed by the Montana Outfitter and Guide Association (MOGA). Insurance also protects you from damage or loss of equipment and provides medical benefits and emergency evacuation coverage during your hunt.

All of our hunts are fair chase, therefore there is a chance you may not harvest an animal during your hunt. If the thought of going home without an animal is not acceptable to you, we suggest to not book a hunt.

LICENSING PROCESS
Due to the increase in people applying for Montana’s limited non-resident hunting licenses, we have updated the process in which we apply for all licenses and permits. Upper Canyon Outfitters now applies for all booked hunters’ preference points, licenses and permits. If hunters apply on their own, and do not receive a license, deposits are not refunded.

UCO will do everything we can to acquire a license, but due to the limited amount of licenses, we cannot guarantee hunters will draw. If UCO applies for you and you do not draw, you will be fully refunded your deposit or move your deposit to the following year. Because of the high demand for nonresident licenses, the state suggests that out-of-state hunters start planning hunting trips two years in advance. This allows hunters to purchase preference points in advance which increases the hunter’s chance of drawing.
