A Historic Montana Ranch
Blacktail Ranch and Lodge is a historic 8,000-acre gem located where the rolling hills meet the Rocky Mountains near Wolf Creek, Montana. The history of the ranch dates back to the late 1800s, while we have been operating as a guest ranch since the 1950s.
Beautiful Mountains and Horseback Trail Rides
Here at the ranch, we’re surrounded by stunning mountain terrain and while here, our guests enjoy horseback trail rides, comfortable accommodations, ranch exploration, hiking, fishing and three meals a day.
Guests can set out on horseback trail rides every day, and there is really no better way to explore Blacktail Ranch and Lodge and potentially see wildlife than on the back of a horse. Our herd of horses can accommodate a wide variety of riding experience levels, from beginners needing basic instruction to advanced riders in search of longer day rides into the mountains. Ride with our local cowboys to get a taste of the West.
For additional riding opportunities, guests can opt to add on our Divide Ride for an additional fee. A two-night, three-day ride, this includes riding to the top of the Continental Divide and taking in 360-degree views of the Rocky Mountains. Accommodations include a comfy bed inside our Hide Out Cabin, a tent or sleeping under the star-filled skies of Montana.
Outdoor Recreation
Whether you prefer to fish a mountain stream or cast your line across a wide river, both are easily accessible in and around the ranch. The South Fork of the Dearborn River flows through the heart of the ranch, while off-site guided and unguided fishing trips on the nearby Blackfoot or Missouri rivers can be arranged.
Blacktail Ranch and Lodge also has amazing archeological sites, including an extensive cave system that dates back to the last ice age. Additional highlights include a Sun Wheel, Medicine Wheel and tipi rings from American Indians who traveled in, around and through the region. We also have an on-site museum that’s home to hundreds of artifacts from throughout the property, as well as antiques from the homestead era of the ranch.
Here at the ranch, we want you to enjoy every minute of your vacation, whether that means planning a full day of adventure and excitement or simply relaxing on your cabin deck with a good book. If you’re looking for additional relaxation, we can also help arrange an on-site massage or private yoga session.
