4UR Ranch has been welcoming families to this spectacular valley in the Colorado Rocky Mountains for over 120 years. We invite you to join us for our exceptional trail riding and personalized horsemanship program, our spectacular fly fishing on 6 miles of private tailwater, an incomparable children’s program, the peace and serenity of our natural hot springs pool, and, at the end of the day, a food and wine selection prepared by our Cordon Bleu-trained executive chef. Having been family owned for 40 years, the 4UR has been renovated and restored to pamper today’s guest while stewarding the magnificent legacy of days gone by.
Just before the turn of the century, a railroad tycoon by the name of General William J. Palmer was founding the cities of Alamosa, Durango, and Colorado Springs. While in the area he came upon this property, purchased it, and built WAGON WHEEL GAP HOT SPRINGS RESORT, a small establishment of gentility and relaxation – his own guest ranch. Being of considerable means, the General would frequently invite his friends to visit, bringing them by private train through the San Juan Mountains to the headwaters of the Rio Grande River. Here he would lavish them with great fishing, relaxing hot springs, and refined dining. Today the same timeless qualities of nature, elegance, and history continue to make the 4UR ranch a marvelous experience.
Many of our guests have been coming to the ranch for years and are now into the 4th and 5th generations. Countless solid friendships have been established between guests at the 4UR and continue to this day. Kids especially like seeing their “friends” the same week, year after year. Tradition is important at the 4UR.
We’re very proud of our experienced staff. Whether they’re organizing a day’s activities for the children or bringing a cool iced tea to the pool, you’ll notice their pride and service really makes the difference.
If you’re an experienced rider we have some terrific trails waiting for you. If not, don’t worry, in no time, with a little help, you’ll be enjoying a gourmet picnic in the beautiful backcountry with friends. For the Junior Wrangler, we have a wonderful program designed to give kids the opportunity to learn all about horses. At the end of the week, they perform in the Gymkhana, a rodeo for youngsters.
Youngsters of all ages are welcome at the 4UR. Counselors conduct special programs Sunday through Friday for those 5 years and up. Riding lessons, horse care, and grooming, trail rides, swimming, picnics, hikes, fishing, and hayrides are just some of the activities offered. We also offer a day-care program for those under the age of 5 years in the afternoons called the “Midges.”
We’ve spent many years creating the best possible environs for Browns, Rainbows, and Native Cutthroats. The result has been some of the best private fishing in the State of Colorado. And for the more adventurous, experienced guides can take you to timberline to fish our own “Lost Lakes,” perfect for a few nights stay in the wilderness.
This ranch was founded by virtue of its natural hot springs. Modesty prevents us from claiming any medical miracles but the waters do have a tendency to relax the body and refresh the soul. Enjoy a therapeutic massage by one of our experienced massage therapists. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast there is swimming, sporting clays & trap shooting, hiking, rafting, mountain biking, massage therapy, or just about anything you can come up with. However, if you have a mind to kick back, come sit on the porch, put your feet up and read a good book or rustle up a bridge game. No matter what you choose to do during your stay, there is no place quite like the 4UR.
Guests are welcomed to the ranch from June through October. JUNE is a wonderful month to attend an art workshop hosted by the 4UR or experience our popular Horsemanship Program. JULY and AUGUST are our busiest months so you’ll want to make your reservations early. The 4th of July festivities are legendary in nearby Creede. If you’ve never been with us for the fishing and the fall color of SEPTEMBER and OCTOBER, we can only tell you that it is indescribable. Fall is our favorite time to bring out the rods. This is a fisherman’s paradise. Come see us for a truly memorable summer.
Our guests are immediately absorbed into our phenomenal Natural Horsemanship program and world-renowned private fly fishing. Children ages 5-12 enjoy a daily adventurous kids’ program that is fun and also educational. Throw in mountain biking, hiking, rafting, trap and sporting clays, heated pool, natural hot springs, and a massage and you have happy and contented guests week after week and year after year.
